Marquesa Calderon has been selected as the 2018 Shining Stars Tigard Youth Volunteer of the Year, named in honor of former Mayor Jim Nicoli, who passed away in 2000. Mayor Nicoli’s dedication to the youth of our community was a fitting way to honor his name and award a youth in our community who volunteers to make a difference. Many young people in Tigard are active in volunteer efforts and it is our pleasure to acknowledge their contributions of dedication, energy and community spirit. They are our future!
Marquesa attends the International School of Beaverton where she has maintained close to a 4.0 GPA. Outside of school, Marquesa is seen at many Tigard events. She is the current President of the Tigard Youth Advisory Council (TYAC).
As President of the Tigard Youth Advisory Council, Marquesa has led service projects like serving dinner at the Good Neighbor Center, knitting scarves for needy families and lead Adopt-a-Highway cleanups on Main Street. She also volunteered at Trick-or-Treat Main Street and Holiday Tree Lighting in Downtown Tigard. This past March, Marquesa was one of the three Tigard Youth Advisory Council members that represented the City of Tigard as youth delegates at the National League of Cities Conference in Washington, DC.
Marquesa is also a member of the Task Force For the Homeless and has been an active member of the Girl Scouts for the last 11 years. She is also on the varsity Lacrosse team at Southridge High School. All in all, Marquesa volunteers 10-15 hours/week through her various activities.
Please join us in congratulating Marquesa on this well-deserved award. Her award will be formally presented with other Tigard volunteer and business awards at Tigard’s 2018 Shining Stars Community Awards Gala held on Friday, April 27th from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Embassy Suites – Washington Square, event location host. With a theme of “Masquerade”, this elegant event includes dinner, silent auction, dessert dash, awards and more. Tickets are only $55 per person. So grab your mask and come join us to celebrate Tigard!
